Sir Winston Churchill worked deep into the night, long after the world around him had gone quiet, and his most consequential thinking often happened in those late hours. Davidoff built this line around that habit, aging select tobacco for six months inside Speyside single malt Scotch whisky casks before rolling. Originally released as a 2020 Limited Edition, the Petit Panetela became a permanent addition to the standard range starting January 2024.

The Late Hour is a different cigar from the standard Winston Churchill in every respect that matters. The wrapper shifts from the standard line's reddish Ecuadorian Rojiza to a darker Ecuadorian Habano Oscuro, a leaf that has undergone additional fermentation and carries more oil, more weight, and a rougher, more rustic texture. Underneath, the Mexican San Andrés binder remains, but the filler tobacco, sourced from the Dominican Republic and Nicaragua, spends six months resting inside barrels that previously held Speyside single malt Scotch whisky. That resting period allows the wood and spirit character of the cask to work into the tobacco itself, so the whisky's presence in the final smoke comes from the leaf rather than from any added flavoring.

Construction on the Petit Panetela differs from the rest of the Late Hour line as well. While the Robusto, Toro, and Churchill sizes use full long-filler tobacco, the Petit Panetela is built as a mixed-filler cigar: a genuine whole-leaf wrapper and binder wrapped around filler tobacco composed of leftover cuts from the same premium leaf used elsewhere in the line. Edward Simon, Oettinger Davidoff's chief marketing officer, described the intention behind making this format permanent as giving fans of the Late Hour blend a shorter way to experience the same complexity found in the longer, full long-filler vitolas.

The result at 4 x 38 delivers dark chocolate, oak, roasted coffee, leather, and a distinct whisky-laced sweetness that separates it clearly from anything else in the Davidoff catalog. The smaller ring gauge sharpens the flavor's clarity rather than diluting it, and the draw remains clean and consistent despite the mixed-filler construction. This is a cigar built specifically for the reflective, solitary hour it is named for.
