Product Description
Despite the name, there is nothing sinister here. Insidious was Asylum's first departure from its bolder, punchier core lineup, built specifically to introduce two things the brand had never done before: an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper and a sweetened cap. The result is the most approachable, mellow cigar Asylum has ever released, wrapped around a genuinely massive 7 x 64 Gordo frame.
Asylum, part of the CLE Cigar Company family founded by Christian Eiroa, built its early reputation on big, bold, punchy cigars that leaned into the brand's horror-inspired identity. Insidious was a deliberate change of direction, blended by Tom Lazuka to give the Asylum portfolio something it was missing: a genuinely mellow, easy-drinking cigar that new smokers could pick up without hesitation and that experienced smokers could reach for when the mood called for something relaxed rather than intense.
The golden brown Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper, grown under the natural cloud cover that gives Ecuador its reputation for shade-friendly tobacco, is the first of its kind in the entire Asylum catalog. It wraps around an aged core of Honduran long-filler and binder, tobacco grown in the Danlí region and the Jamastran Valley, an area long known for producing rich, full-bodied leaf that draws favorable comparisons to Cuba's Pinar del Rio region. Despite that heritage, the overall blend here stays firmly mild to medium, letting the Connecticut wrapper's natural creaminess lead the way.
The other first is the sweetened cap, a subtle touch that was new territory for Asylum at the time of release. It isn't an overpowering, candy-like sweetness. It's a light, natural touch, closer to sugar cane than anything artificial, that fades within the first few draws and gives way to the cigar's actual flavor: nuts, sweet cream, cedar, and a gentle spice that stays consistent from first light to the final inch. At 7 x 64, this Gordo is one of the largest formats in the Insidious line, delivering a long, unhurried session that easily runs past ninety minutes.

Flavor progression:
- Opening: a light, natural sweetness from the cap gives way quickly to graham cracker and cashew notes from the Connecticut wrapper
- Mid-smoke: sweet cream and cedar settle in, with a gentle pepper appearing on the retrohale, the profile staying consistent and relaxed
- Close: nuts and a soft spice carry through to the final third, the mellow character holding steady all the way to the nub
