From the ashes of a South Dakota retailer's flavored cigar project comes 867 Zero, the mid-scale tier of Asylum's steeped cigar family. This is CLE's take on flavored tobacco done through a genuinely different method: not surface flavoring, but steeping the rolled cigar itself in flavored liquid or exposing it to concentrated aromas until the tobacco absorbs the character.

The origin story here is worth knowing. In 2022, Tom Lazuka and Christian Eiroa developed three flavored blends for Deadwood Tobacco Co. in South Dakota under the name "Chasing the Dragon." After a trademark dispute over the Deadwood name led to a lawsuit from Drew Estate, the line was rebranded and relaunched nationally in December 2023 as Asylum 867, working alongside Deadwood's own team to refine the final versions. The 867 family splits into three tiers by size and flavor intensity: Auntie in smaller, more delicate formats, Midnight Oil in Asylum's signature oversized ring gauges, and Zero sitting in the middle with traditional sizing, Robusto, Toro, and Churchill.

This Robusto starts with a genuine Honduran puro, wrapper, binder, and long-fillers all from Honduras, finished in a rich, oily maduro leaf. After rolling, the cigars go through the steeping process CLE has built the entire 867 line around, either submerged in flavored liquid or held in a closed environment to absorb aroma before drying. The result delivers wild berries and creamy nougat as the dominant flavor notes, layered on top of a sweetened cap that adds an immediate sugary hit from the first draw. At 5 x 50, this is a relatively quick, roughly thirty-minute smoke, medium-bodied throughout, with the tobacco base playing a supporting role to the fruit and nougat character that defines the experience.

Flavor progression:

  1. Opening: an immediate sweetness from the cap, wild berry notes leading clearly alongside a creamy nougat character
  2. Mid-smoke: the berry and nougat combination remains steady, with the Honduran maduro base contributing subtle depth underneath
  3. Close: the sweetness holds through to the final draws, ending on the same fruit-forward, creamy note that defines the smoke throughout
