Midnight Oil is the largest and most flavor-intense tier of Asylum's three-part 867 family, built specifically for smokers who want the steeped flavor concept delivered in Asylum's signature oversized ring gauges. This 6 x 60 is one of three sizes in the line, and it's designed to be the boldest expression of what steeping can do.

The origin story matters here. In 2022, Christian Eiroa and Tom Lazuka developed three flavored blends for Deadwood Tobacco Co. in South Dakota under the name "Chasing the Dragon." A trademark dispute with Drew Estate over the Deadwood name led to a rebrand, and the line relaunched nationally as Asylum 867 in December 2023, working directly with Deadwood's own team to refine the final blends. The three resulting lines, Auntie, Zero, and Midnight Oil, were designed with increasing flavor intensity as the sizes grow larger, and Midnight Oil, with its 54, 60, and 70 ring gauge options, sits at the top of that scale.

The process behind the flavor is called steeping: the rolled cigars are either submerged in flavored liquid or held in a closed environment to absorb concentrated aroma before curing and drying, a method CLE hasn't detailed extensively but which produces a genuinely different character than a simple sweetened cap alone. On lighting, Midnight Oil opens with sweetness and tea notes, quickly joined by pepper and earthy undertones that keep the smoke from tipping entirely into dessert territory. As the cigar progresses, black pepper and cherry sweetness give way to a fuller Honduran tobacco character, with unexpected spikes of raspberry, green tea, and citrus surfacing throughout. The sweetened cap keeps the smoke from ever turning bitter, and by the finish, the profile settles into a medium to full-bodied experience where the natural tobacco has genuinely earned its place alongside the infused flavoring rather than being buried underneath it.

Flavor progression:

  1. Opening: sweetness and tea notes lead immediately, with black pepper and cherry sweetness following close behind
  2. Mid-smoke: earthy Honduran tobacco character emerges, with occasional spikes of raspberry, green tea, and citrus cutting through the sweetness
  3. Close: the infused sweetness diminishes as raw tobacco flavor takes the lead, finishing medium to full-bodied without ever turning bitter
